The Modesty Survey

The Rebelution, with its wonderful tag line “do hard things,” has now released the Modesty Survey. It’s viewable online here. Generally, this has to be a good thing - although it might not surprise you that much to hear that I’d disagree with some of the sentiments expressed by other people who filled it in!

While the idea was clearly a good one, I do feel such detailed advise needs to be very carefully applied to avoid legalism. I also think that some of these guys place too much on the girls to stop them lusting. Yes, girls can help their brothers by not dressing or acting (especially acting) provocatively, but it’s the guys who lust and it’s the guys who need to fight that lust head on with the gospel, not by getting the girls to do it through the back door as it were. You can still lust if a girl is dressed completely ‘modestly’ up to her neck and isn’t even remotely flirtatious etc; some of the commenters seem to have forgotten that.

The fundamental thing to be stressed is that modesty is a heart attitude and not primarily a dress code. The petition listed on the first page of the survey gets this bang on.
