Jollyblogger on N.T. Wright
The Jollyblogger has a really good post on good ol’ Tom Wright and his ideas on the Divinity of Jesus. It is, remarkabley for the blogosphere, well balanced! Neither is he clutching Wright’s coat tails with glee, nor is he screaming that Wright be burnt at the stake and tarring everything and anything near him with the heretic brush.
It certainly convicted me of something I’m often very guilty of: using my big fat theological tarring brush far too indiscriminately. I’m not, for example, very sympathetic to the New Perspective on Paul and I’m a bit dubious about his Gospel & Empire/Fresh Perspective type angles, as a result I tend to immediately reject something by Wright, because it’s by him. And yet, on many things he’s excellent! I think I probably need to make a greater commitment to read more of him than the paltry little amounts I have. All of my reading has been for essays and has been Pauline stuff, I haven’t really examined his great work on the resurrection, or any of his copious writings on Jesus, or his little commentary series, which I’m told is often really rather good.
Anyway, once I mow through my pile of books (or maybe ‘if‘) I might get out my discernment hat and go reading some Wright. That’s got to be alright, right?
I had to. Sorry.
